A pre-roll can be a simple flower joint, an infused product, a small single, or part of a multipack. Learn what the format names mean and how to compare licensed options.

Pre-roll menus have expanded far beyond one basic joint. A shopper may see flower pre-rolls, infused pre-rolls, cones, dogwalkers, minis, singles, and multipacks on the same page. The package size may be stated as total weight, while potency appears as a percentage. Comparing them takes more than choosing the highest number.

This guide explains common pre-roll types and the information found on licensed New York labels. It is written for adults 21 and older who want to compare formats before visiting a dispensary in Suffolk County.

What is a pre-roll?

A pre-roll is cannabis flower prepared in rolling paper and sold ready to use. Licensed producers grind or mill the flower, fill the paper, add a filter or crutch when the design calls for one, and seal the finished product in regulated packaging. A standard flower pre-roll contains cannabis flower without added concentrate.

Pre-rolls appeal to shoppers who do not want to grind flower, roll by hand, or carry several accessories. They can also make it easier to try a cultivar without buying a larger jar. Convenience does not make every pre-roll interchangeable. Flower quality, grind, fill, paper, storage, size, and added ingredients can all change the experience.

Flower pre-rolls

Flower pre-rolls contain ground cannabis flower. The label should identify the product, cultivar where applicable, cannabinoid content, processor, batch information, and required warnings. Some producers describe the flower as whole flower, premium flower, or small-bud flower. Those phrases should be evaluated alongside the complete label rather than treated as universal grades.

A well-filled pre-roll should feel even from end to end without obvious empty sections. Minor differences in density are normal. Before buying, check that the package is sealed and undamaged. After opening, follow the storage directions and keep unused products in the original child-resistant package.

Infused pre-rolls

An infused pre-roll combines flower with a cannabis concentrate. The added concentrate may be placed inside the flower, applied to the outside, or incorporated through another licensed production method. Common label terms include distillate-infused, resin-infused, rosin-infused, kief-coated, or diamond-infused.

Infused pre-rolls often contain more THC than standard flower pre-rolls. They may also burn differently. New consumers should not assume that the same number of puffs will produce the same experience across both formats. Read the potency and serving guidance, start with less than you think you need, and allow time before consuming more.

Infused does not automatically mean higher quality. It identifies an added product component. Check the full ingredient list, the type of concentrate, the cannabinoid panel, and the Certificate of Analysis for the specific batch.

Singles and multipacks

A single package contains one pre-roll. It can be useful for trying a new producer, cultivar, size, or infused format without committing to several units. Singles also come in a wide weight range, so compare the stated net weight rather than assuming every single is the same size.

A multipack contains several smaller pre-rolls or several full-size pre-rolls. The label may show the total package weight, individual unit weight, or both. Divide the total weight by the number of pieces when you need a quick comparison. For example, a 2.5-gram five-pack contains an average of 0.5 grams per pre-roll.

Multipacks can be convenient for shoppers who prefer shorter sessions or want individually sized portions. They are not automatically a better value. Compare total weight, unit count, potency, freshness, and price using the live menu.

Full-size, mini, and dogwalker formats

Retail names such as mini, shorty, and dogwalker generally refer to smaller pre-rolls. The terms are not precise units of measurement. One brand's mini may differ from another's, so the net weight provides the useful comparison.

A smaller format may suit someone who does not expect to finish a larger pre-roll. Relighting a partially used pre-roll can change its flavor and burn. If you do save one, make sure it is fully extinguished and cool before returning it to an appropriate container. Store it securely away from children, pets, and anyone under 21.

Cones, straight rolls, and paper choices

A cone is wider near the lighting end and narrows toward the filter. A straight roll keeps a more uniform width. Paper may be made from hemp, rice, flax, or other materials permitted for the product. These design choices can affect draw and burn, but they do not establish the quality of the cannabis inside.

If you have had problems with an uneven burn or tight draw, ask about the fill and paper instead of focusing only on cultivar. Keep pre-rolls dry and protected from crushing. Excess moisture can make them difficult to light, while very dry flower can burn quickly.

How to read a pre-roll label

New York's adult-use label guide says inhalable products typically state cannabinoid content as percentages and identify the cultivar. Use the label to check:

  • Net weight and number of pre-rolls
  • Whether the product contains flower only or added concentrate
  • THC, CBD, and other listed cannabinoid content
  • Ingredients and allergen information where applicable
  • Processor and batch or lot information
  • Package and expiration dates
  • Storage instructions and required warnings
  • The QR code linking to the Certificate of Analysis

Match the batch number on the CoA to the package. The report can provide test results for cannabinoid content and regulated contaminants. If a QR code is unreadable or the batch does not match, ask the dispensary team before purchasing.

Potency is one part of the decision

A higher THC percentage does not guarantee a better pre-roll. Freshness, aroma, cannabinoid profile, flower quality, construction, serving size, and personal tolerance all matter. Product names and effect labels also cannot predict one person's response with certainty.

If you are new to cannabis or returning after a break, begin with a standard flower pre-roll rather than assuming an infused option is the right starting point. Take a small amount, wait, and do not drive. Cannabis affects people differently.

Licensed pre-rolls and New York rules

Only adults 21 and older may purchase adult-use cannabis in New York. Buy from a retailer licensed by the Office of Cannabis Management. Licensed products carry required labels and are subject to state testing requirements. Keep cannabis within New York; crossing state lines with it remains illegal under state guidance.

Consumption is prohibited in vehicles and anywhere smoking tobacco is prohibited. Local and property rules can be stricter. Review the state's adult-use information before traveling or consuming away from home. For more local context, see our New York cannabis laws guide.

Questions to ask before choosing

  • Is this flower-only or infused?
  • What is the net weight of each pre-roll?
  • How many units are in the package?
  • Where are the package and expiration dates?
  • Can I review the CoA for this batch?
  • How should the opened package be stored?

These questions lead to a clearer comparison than asking for the strongest pre-roll. If flower quality is your priority, our quality cannabis guide explains freshness, aroma, trichomes, and labels in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Are infused pre-rolls the same as regular pre-rolls?

No. A regular pre-roll contains flower, while an infused pre-roll includes an added cannabis concentrate. The infused version may be substantially more potent.

Are multipacks cheaper than singles?

Not always. Compare the total price, total net weight, number of pieces, and product type. A multipack may offer convenience without having the lowest price per gram.

Can I order pre-rolls for delivery through the mail?

No. Cannabis cannot be mailed or shipped across state lines. Simply Green allows adults 21 and older to reserve available products online for pickup at the Coram store.

How should pre-rolls be stored?

Follow the product label and keep them in their original child-resistant packaging, locked, out of sight, and away from children and pets. Protect the package from heat, excess moisture, and crushing.
